Expansion Complete; Applicants Welcome!

SANTA ANA, CA - The "Welcome" mat is out and the doors are wide open for new incubator businesses at the Digital Media Center, says DMC Director Bart Hoffman.  "We have added ten offices in our incubator area, giving us a total of 24 offices to accommodate the demand for space, with 13 currently available for rent."

The expansion was driven by demand: "We have more interest in our programs than anyone could have imagined," says Hoffman.  If growth and demand are reliable indicators, the Digital Media Center is a resounding success both as an educational facility that accommodated an estimated 1,800 students in the 2006-2007 school year, and as a business incubator that just welcomed its fourth tenant, Abroadcasting, an innovative technology and service that enables consumers to access TV programming from other countries.

Abroadcasting partners with local broadcast TV stations internationally to broadcast their programming over the internet.  Viewers can access the programming directly from the internet for free.

"The DMC was designed and constructed to provide state-of-the-art technology that is virtually unavailable to a start-up digital media company like Abroadcasting, and our three initial business incubator clients: MaMoCa, Clupedia and Teresis Media Management, Inc.," says Hoffman. (For more information on these companies, go to http://www.dmc-works.com/biz_residents.html.)

As you walk through the build-out while the ceilings are still open, the bundles of cable that run overhead are just one clue to the high-technology infrastructure that this facility provides its incubator clients.

A peek into the room where the computer servers are stored is another.  "Offering our high-tech businesses the opportunity to reduce overhead by self-managing their servers can make a significant difference in a young company's ability to succeed," Hoffman says.

"This is a unique building that offers unique amenities.  We have to think not only about what technology our students and our businesses need today, but also what they will need in five to ten years, and build in extra capacity designed to anticipate and accommodate those future needs."

It is this progressive approach that also appeals to applicants seeking space in the business incubator.  Assistant Vice Chancellor Julie Slark points out, "Applicants must have 'A product or service that represents a unique technology that can create a competitive advantage,' (http://www.dmc-works.com/biz_requirements.html).  Our entrepreneurial clients require a progressive outlook and the ability to accommodate their growth.  Now we're ready to accommodate more clients and also accommodate the growth of our current clients."
